the HISTORY OF ISRAEL'S HISTORY

The Battle of Jericho

The Bible tells the story of Israel's conquest of Canaan, its judges and kings, and its eventual defeat and exile at the hands of the Assyrians and Babylonians.

But how trustworthy are the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings?   These books don't just tell us what happened - they try to explain what happened through the lens of theology.

By taking up and reshaping older narratives, the authors of this history also reshaped Israel's past, and our understanding of it down to the present. When we peel back the layers of the Bible, we can both get to the real history underneath and see how that history has been used to promote a particular theological message.

Recovering the History of Israel and the Bible

  • What parts of Israel’s history are historical?
  • Why do some parts of the history contradict each other?
  • What did the biblical writers want us to believe?
  • How did the biblical authors adapt earlier sources?
  • How does archaeology challenge or confirm this story?
  • Who was King David really?
  • What is the theology behind the history?
  • How did the Israelite tribes become an Israelite nation?
  • How is history writing a political and theological act?

At the Intersection of History and Theology

"No history is a simple retelling of the past. Every history, and every historian, has an agenda. What they choose to include, what they leave out; what they emphasize, what they downplay; what they ignore, and what they repeat over and over again - all of this shows us what they're really up to. Reading the historical books of the Bible prepares us to read any historical account, past or present. The biblical authors gave their answers; we now get to ask our questions."
